Children at Risk

Our work here is directed at those children, across South Africa, and indeed, Africa, who are marginalised through a variety of circumstances and who find themselves outside of the normal school system.  Many are abused, the victims of desperate poverty, orphans due to HIV/AIDS or of violent crime.  They include street children and those who are scavengers on landfill sites.
Our preferred approach is through the Christian schools which belong to ACSI. Schools identify the number of needy in their community. We then train the senior learners at, generally, Grade 10 and 11.  They are taught, to teach Life Skills, Literacy and Numeracy. This  programme has been modified from a well researched and developed programme for Adult Basic Education and Training, up to grade 3 level.
The problem and the need is vast.  We work with many others such as churches, other organizations and, in some cases, even individuals.   Our declared intent is to get the children back into normal schooling and not to create an alternate school system.  We also wish to continue supporting the child so that they will not slide back into the situation in which we first found them.
Learners from the above-mentioned schools have learned to practice servanthood, and to apply Christian principles such as love, compassion, humility and so on.  In every instance, those who took part have found purpose and have grown immensely. They all developed a deep compassion and understanding for other people and they learned the valuable truth that giving is so much more rewarding than taking.

In 2009, the Open School program will spread wider around South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.  It will also expand into several other countries in Africa.  Please contact one of our team for more information:
