Authentic Christian Education

Authentic Christian Education

Sean Moore – ACSI Director

As we strive for Christian Education that is genuine, meaningful and directly impactful on the children as well as the extended school community, we ought to take time to define and explore what it takes to be authentic. Authentic is defined as: of undisputed origin and not a copy. Synonyms include: genuine, original, real, actual, bona fide, true.

The original decision

The original decision

In 1 Samuel 8, God gave the Israelites a choice after they approached the prophet Samuel to ask that he appoint a King. The Israelites wanted to be like all other nations that boasted kings, queens, palaces, armies and kingdoms. Whilst God reminded Samuel that the people were not rejecting him but God, He also reminded the Israelites of the consequences of their choice. Despite this, the people made a decision and God appointed Saul as the first King of the Israelites.

In the context of Christian Education, the same choice is presented to us. As a school, we either choose to be like the other schools (nations) with their amazing buildings, rolling fields, extravagant subject choices, and focus on results – or we choose God as our King, focussing on nurturing and discipling children towards a growing knowledge and experience of Him. An educational experience where children develop and model a Biblical view of the world, knowing for certain that God has a plan and purpose for their lives. This original decision will have its blessings as we choose God as our ‘King’ or its consequences as we choose to be like the world.

The original call.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit–fruit that will last–and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” (John 15:16). An authentic Christian School must be led, administered and stewarded by those God has chosen and prepared for this task. As God entrusts leaders and teachers to this enormous responsibility, He calls and invites those He has chosen for the work. We get to accept this calland then respond through giving ourselves to the cause. The acceptance of this call expects that, as leaders and teachers, we choose and commit to personal growth. Firstly, in our relationship with Jesus and then in the roles and tasks needed in the delivery of the excellent educational experience demanded of us. The original call gives us a choice to respond to God’s call to service and sacrifice.

The original command.

Jesus clarified the main objective of our lives and that of Christian Education. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31). This command of love gives us the freedom to love all those God places on our journey and in our school, including those of any race, gender, culture and/or ability. All children need to know Him and have the opportunity to experience a relationship with Him. The original command has no place for prejudice of any kind. All children are welcome at our table.

The original opportunity.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 18:19-20). Christian Education presents an amazing opportunity to prepare the next generation for service to Him. A Christian teacher has the potential of transforming lives that will have generational impact and implications. The Christian School and the Christian teacher have the opportunity to be a blessing and make a difference in each community. “Let your light shine before men, that. they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) This original opportunity has the potential to change the world.

The original role model.

The Christian Leader and teacher have the example of Jesus to follow and emulate, both in leadership and in teaching. Jesus challenges us to be like Him, to love like He loved and to serve as He served. “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20: 26-28) A Christian School has the potential to significantly impact the community in which it serves and can model a way and view of life that is so different to the world. As we focus on the original role model, we bring a perspective that prepares us for life and service on earth and a future with Him.

Aiming for the real deal.

Authentic Christian Education starts with an original vision, placed in the heart of a select few, who have the calling, drive and commitment to transform lives. The journey of authentic Christian Education will demand great humility, faith and courage. Yet, there is nothing better than to be involved in such a great work. The reward, we trust, will only be received as we join our Father in heaven. “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:23)
