Reflective Learning is a South African based company that have embraced the crisis of maths tuition and performance within South African Schools. Reflective Learning assessments are highly-detailed diagnostics that measure the mastery of foundational conceptual landmarks across seven threads of Maths and benchmarked at three levels. The tests are also available in Afrikaans.

The 3 diagnostic tests are the following:

1. Junior Primary diagnostic test: Suitable for Grades 3 and 4: 24 concepts measured Approx. 30 – 45 min
2. Senior Primary diagnostic test: Suitable for Grades 5 to 7: 51 concepts measured Approx. 45 – 60 min
3. High School diagnostic test: Suitable for Grades 8 to 11: 81 concepts measured Approx. 2 – 3 hours

6 Learning Behaviours that influence learner achievement: Pace, Precision, Perseverance, Mindset, Motivation, and Metacognition.
Individual formative feedback comments provide further insights. Through this, learning gaps and the last grade-level of secure understanding can be identified which informs how far back in grade levels any remediation is required. Results are produced at an individual level as well as cohort level (at overall, thread and concept level). The test is completed on-line with no time limit. Questions are of various formats which include: multiple-choice, close, transformation, drag-and-drop construction and open (numerical and written) questions.

  • Schools will receive both individual and cohort (class/grade) feedback.
  • The diagnostic benchmarking test may be written in every Grade between Grade 3 and Grade 11.
  • The six learning behaviours (as listed above) are evaluated and reported on.
  • For the set fee, a 12-month licence is issued. This means that teachers and/or pupils may re-write the test at any time during the 12-month period. This enables teachers and School leaders to evaluate progress made by the Grade, class and each individual.
  • The individual learner results are available immediately whilst the class (cohort) results are available as soon as the class have completed the diagnostic test.
  • High School learners are able to extend their journey with Reflective Learning who will assist learners with individualised remedial action based on the individual test scores. This is not included in the fee and is negotiated directly with Reflective Learning.

Understand each learners’ conceptual understanding and cognitive processing skills using our unique conceptual framework and Learning Behaviours, including the of metacognition and mathematical mindset. Insightful and easy-to-understand class-wide and individual learning analytics enable teachers to develop class-wide and learner-differentiated teaching strategies with a high degree of accuracy. Our diagnostics measure the understanding of key concepts required for mastery of future learning, benchmarked at multiple CAPS level

THE PROCESS

1. Sign up with ACSI

Send a class list with first name, surname and school to ACSI. Reflective Learning will develop logins and ACSI will pass these on with instructions on how to run the online assessment.

2. Get the login codes

Licences are valid for 12 months. Assessments are completed using a computer, tablet or cell phone and can be completed over multiple days if needed.

3. Take the assessment

Teachers will have access to individual and cohort reports online immediately after learners compete the assessment.

4. Get the results

After digesting the results, teachers can provide feedback to learners and parents as best suited to the situation.

5. Provide feedback

6. Provide remediation

Teachers can now use the reports to focus their time on building weaker areas of understanding for their class.

7. Re-assess learners

Licences are valid for a year. You can therefor track the progress made by learners by running the assessment again. We recommend a minimum of six-month break between assessments.
