School Profile: Rock of Christ

John and Joycelyn Ellis

Rock of Christ Christian School (ROCCS) recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020 as a fully registered independent school.
Two years after we took a call to Richard’s Bay in 2008 and, together with the Church at the time, God had placed upon our hearts to embark on a special mission to our local community in the form of planting a Christian School that catered for students from Grade 3R to Grade 12.
The VISION was to provide educational programmes which not only met all academic and educational requirements for a student, but one which would be built upon a strong Biblical foundation and could offer a full discipleship programme across all grades for each child.
In this, we would “take back” the educational and ministry needs of our children according to the Scriptures.  Many schools have the “label” of being called “Christian” but sadly do not really live by or teach even basic Bible principles or Christian values – except perhaps to relegate “Christianity” to a formal “opening prayer” or to teach Christ as simply another religion among others which has no real significance or relevance in the lives of our children today.
Historically, some of the most renowned learning institutions—almost without exception the world over—were built on Biblical truth and were widely recognised not only as institutions of excellence but essentially as Christ-centred ones too.  Unfortunately, over the years, many of these great centres of learning have departed from their core identity and the very qualities that made them great in the first place.  Some in fact now stand for and teach anything and everything but the values they once so cherished!

Other member schools at the same time are rejoicing at very good public exam results, and seeing growth and provision. Their schools are able to open online, and they see new learning opportunities for staff, pupils and parents. With these schools we too rejoice and celebrate, and we thank God for their testimony of His provision:

ROCCS Assembly

May we remind ourselves that education is actually GOD’S IDEA – not man’s! The earliest educational practices were birthed in response to God’s command to His people in the Ancient Near East. Educating and training our children in God’s word and His ways is both commanded and strongly advocated in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.  Some examples are found in Deuteronomy 6; 11:18-25; Proverbs 22:6; and Ephesians 6:4.
According to the Bible, TRUE SUCCESS and enduring PROSPERITY in life comes first and foremost from knowing and obeying His Word. Secular society has always attempted to captivate the education of our children in an attempt to fill them with the vain philosophies and teachings of man, based on secularism and human reason which they exalt above the wisdom and knowledge of the Creator.

Beginning with just a home school in 2008 for our own three children, and after having been approached by many community members who wanted to bring their children to our home school, we, together with the Church, concluded that God wanted us to open a full Christian School Ministry.
Rock of Christ Christian School (ROCCS) was registered with the Department of Education in 2010. We started with around 70 children, spanning from pre-school right up to grade 12 in the first year, and quickly grew to around 250 students after about three years! We have sensed such a special presence of God and His continued favour over the years, and have observed many children not only coming to Christ, but through His grace and wisdom, also growing and developing in such amazing ways in so many areas of their lives.
Christian schools not only give the LOCAL CHURCH a great opportunity to minister to children – virtually every day of the week – but also provide an ongoing partnership with parents of the students. ROCCS moreover currently employs a total of 26 Christian educators and support staff who, with our local church, continue to serve our community together.
We give thanks unto God for His continued favour and blessings, always being mindful that, “unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it…” (Psalm 127a). We can truly testify to the goodness and provision of God in establishing ROCCS, and it has been proved over and over again that He remains ever faithful to His Word!
