Hiring With a Purpose

Jennifer Gonzales | ACSI Human Resources Generalist

In Christian education, hiring is a mission-critical task. We aren’t just filling positions; we’re stewarding God’s mission in our schools. After serving in Christian education for almost 20 years, one thing has become clear: the people we hire shape our schools just as much as the programs we implement. Below are five principles to help leaders hire well.

Begin with Prayer and Vision Alignment

Hiring isn’t just about qualifications, it’s about calling. Begin the process by praying with your team and reviewing your school’s mission and core values. Every hire should align with both the spiritual and professional direction of your school.

Prioritize Cultural and Spiritual Fit

A resume can’t always tell you if someone’s heart beats for the same mission. Look for signs of spiritual maturity, humility, and a servant-leader spirit during interviews. Questions like, “How do you live out your faith in the classroom?” or “How has God shaped your journey in education?” go deeper than traditional questions.

Clarify Expectations Early

Transparency builds trust. Be clear about job responsibilities, expectations, and school culture. Let candidates know what spiritual formation looks like on your campus and how they’ll be supported and held accountable.

Involve a Team in the Process

Don’t hire in isolation. Involve trusted colleagues who understand the role and values of your school. A diverse hiring team ensures better discernment and reduces blind spots.
