Benchmark Tools to Help You Compare the Quality of Your Academic School Programme
Debbie-Sue Blanks | ACSI Assistant Director
Standardised tests serve a critical role in education by providing a consistent and objective measure of student performance across different schools and school districts. They offer a reliable benchmark for evaluating educational outcomes, ensuring that all learners, regardless of their background, are assessed against the same academic standards. This comparison allows schools to identify gaps in learning, allocate resources more effectively, and implement targeted interventions. Moreover, standardised tests help to hold schools accountable, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and excellence. By establishing a common metric, these tests enable a fair assessment of both learner achievement and instructional quality, guiding policy decisions and educational reforms that aim to enhance learning for all learners.
A school that only relies on the NSC exams to measure the success of their programme is leaving it too late to make the necessary adjustments to improve their programme. Benchmarking can be done at every grade level to track individual learner performance as well as classes as they progress through school, but due to the cost and time required, many schools opt to conduct standardised exams at the end of a school phase instead of at every grade level. While the data obtained is helpful for tracking individual learner progress, the greatest benefit is that schools are better able to uphold standards and to identify areas for improvement. Therefore, conducting benchmark tests at the juncture between phases is advisable for tracking academic school progress.
Many independent schools in South Africa make use of the International Benchmark Tests (IBT) from ACER to benchmark their learners. This is an excellent tool that is easy to conduct, is graded externally, and compared against learners in over 600 schools all over the world. The value of these tests is that they provide in-depth reports and compare independent school performance against international schools.
Ideally, all independent schools should conduct benchmark tests. If your school is unable to afford the IBT, the South African Department of Education provides the Annual National Assessments, which are available for Grade1-3, Grade 4-6, and Grade 7-9, at no cost. These tests are available on the DBE website and may be easily downloaded. While they do not provide an international comparison, they do give data that should be compared from year-to-year, and used to identify gaps in learning to inform school improvement decisions. These tests are freely available to all independent schools and may also be used as part of school application assessments.
