Thommy Gee walk

During 2023, the Grade 10s at Hoërskool Florida participated in the ‘Thommy Gee Walk in the Shoes of a Child in Need’ project. Around 100 children wanted to be part of making a difference and partnered with Thommy Gee as they raised funds for 90 pairs of school shoes which were donated to the Kairos Foundation in the Western Cape. However, their efforts did not end there. Each child purchased a pair of shoes themselves and agreed to, for one hour or one day, to wear the shoes as they “walked in the shoes of a child in need”. And so, the #giftofdignity got off the ground. Each child who wore the shoes also agreed to make a video for TikTok or any other social media.

Each child could do one of two things: they could either keep the pair of shoes they had purchased, or they could donate that pair as well. Some did this but to our amazement others decided to donate the shoes to the uniform shop at their school. This meant that if there was anyone in the school who needed a pair of shoes, they could get a pair from the uniform shop, free of charge. How is that for a #giftofdignity!

Since then, we have had a professional football coach, a professional squash player and coach and a pastor participate in this project – the professional squash coach even wore the shoes to his next board meeting. All this was to draw attention to the needs of millions of school children who go to school every day without shoes. Imagine the fun we could have with a little creativity and innovation, in order to attract even more attention to this need.
