The Teamwork Tricycle Devotion
Morgan Nel | ACSI Assistant Director
“The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” – 1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)
As Christian educators we have a very important task. This task does not only include academic and social growth, but the spiritual awakening of the children who have been placed in our care.
The relationship between the home, the school and the Lord can be likened to a tricycle. The three wheels represent the teamwork between these three entities. We need wheels that are well-oiled, in place and round – all for one purpose – so that the child will be heading in the right direction.
In 1 Samuel we read the account of Hannah whose womb was once closed. She wept, stopped eating at times, and was altogether downhearted. She prayed to the Lord in deep anguish and made a vow, “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you.” – 1 Samuel 1:11 (NLT).
The Lord remembered her plea and when she gave birth to a son, she named him Samuel, which means, ‘God has heard’.
She fulfilled her vow and raised him until the time came that she took him to the Tabernacle.
Under Eli’s care, Samuel served the Lord – assisting, learning, and obeying as instructed.
And then, one night as Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle, the Lord called out to Samuel.
“Samuel!”
At first, Eli did not realise what was happening, so he sent Samuel back to bed twice. But eventually he realised that it was the Lord calling Samuel.
As teachers, we need to be aware that the children in our care are also called, that they are unique, and that the Lord wants to communicate with them. Our task is to create an atmosphere where the voice of God can be heard.
